Coal & Black
03:05
|
|||
I've been on your trail since Tennessee.
Darlin' what you runnin from are you runnin from me?
I left my fields to make your city my home,
beggin' please don't make a fool out of me
please don't make a fool out of me.
I can see that love ain't been no friend of yours,
she ain't been no friend of mine.
In my hearth there's an ember,
in my window a light.
I'm gonna keep you warm tonight.
I'm gonna keep you warm tonight.
I'll sleep under the moon tonight
and dream of you my darlin.
I'll sleep under the moon tonight.
My heart sleeps at your door.
My heart sleeps at your door.
Dancin' with the devil makin' deals gone bad,
they say my heart is coal and black.
If you kiss me hard enough tonight now darlin'
I think you just might bring me back.
I think you just might bring me back.
I can see that love ain't been no friend of yours,
he ain't been no friend of mine.
My cabin is yours you come sleep in my bed,
i'm gonna make everything alright.
I'm gonna make everything alright.
I'll sleep under the moon tonight
and dream of you my darlin.
I'll sleep under the moon tonight.
My heart sleeps at your door.
My heart sleeps at your door.

Phineas Gage
02:22
|
|||
Fear, Anger, Joy, Desire
All swim together in a chemical fire
It torches all it touches in a fit of ire
Raging uncontained like an unmanned pyre
Like poor, young Phineas who can’t gauge what’s going down
If there’s an avenue you’re gonna go to town
So frayed and torn, every thought born finds such an easy way out
Like poor, young Phineas missing part of his crown
The aperture is open as wide as it goes
The embouchure, I’m hopin’, has the courage to close
The temperature is risin’; the hot air blows
The sea can’t give back what the river bestows
Guardian angel in the front of my head
She filters all that goes in or out
And protects me from dangerous feelings
Like Fear, Anger, and Love

If You Say So
04:16
|
|||
I could write a sound better than the one that your needle's on,
in any key you want just to have your ear.
Oh, everyday you don't call grows longer.
Heavy is the head carrying your crown, one I'd gladly wear
if I don't have to share, would it kill you to care?
Oh, everyday you don't call grows longer.
Why do you wanna know how long it takes?
Why do you wanna see the heart that loves you best break?
Rich is not in debt, it's better to forget, honey spend it now
while everyone's your crowd, and I'm still your clown.
Oh, everyday you don't call grows longer.
Time is on your side, you were once on mine, you were always free
Do you know what you want, or what they want to hear?
Oh, everyday you don't call grows longer.
Why do you wanna go set me free?
When are you gonna know how much you love me?
Okay, if you say so.
Okay, if you say so.
Okay, if you say so. (I could write a sound down better than the one that your needle's on.)
Okay, if you say so. (Rich is not in debt and it's better to forget so honey spend it now.)
Yes I will go. I'm still here though.
Why do you wanna know how long it takes?
Why do you wanna see the heart that loves you best break?
Why do you wanna go set me free?
When are you gonna know how much love me?

Municipal Farm Blues
02:48
|
|||
I don’t wanna go to municipal farm,
but I don’t wanna change my ways.
It’s 15 dollars or 15 days
if you’ve got no means to pay.
This is where I always land
when I’d rather be at 5th and Grand
with a bottle of rum and a pretty little dove
hanging around my neck.
I got out of the pen in Kansas
and thought I’d just find my way home,
keep it clean like a straight arrow,
but I’m thirsty to the bone.
I hit the strip with two dollars
back in that open town
where the jukes are full of pretty women.
I was acting like a clown.
I don’t wanna go to municipal farm,
I’m tired of shucking corn
with the heat of the sun and the thunder of the storm
beating on my corpse.
This is where I always land
when the dice drop from my hand
and I’m out picking fights with those big city lights
flowing through my veins.
I don’t wanna wear your shackles.
I just wanna find my way home
where there’s no chores and no warden.
He’s a mean old son of a gun.
I guess I’ll just wait for heaven
‘cause atop those golden stairs
St. Peter’s a-waitin’ with a bottle
with three x’s and a square.
I don’t wanna go to municipal farm,
but I don’t wanna change my ways.
It’s 15 dollars or 15 days
if you’ve got no means to pay.
This is where I always land
when I’d rather be at 5th and Grand
with a bottle of rum and a pretty little dove
hanging around my neck.

Amusia
04:11
|
|||
I tried to sing the way that I feel only to confuse ya
They say pots and pans are all you hear…Amusia!
You used to sing along with me when you could feel the sound
Yeah, but now it’s different
I couldn’t blame you if you never came around
To hear me say, “Watch them play!” or hear me sing…
I spoke to your Mom and Dad. They’re so glad they didn’t lose ya!
Oliver* is fascinated, I’m just sad…Amusia!
You used to sing along with me when you could feel the sound
Yeah, but now it’s different
I couldn’t blame you if you never came around
To hear me say, “Watch them play!” or hear me sing…
I heard that it was the song that I sent to ya
That made them realize what went wrong…Amusia!
You used to sing along with me when you could feel the sound
Yeah, but now it’s different
I couldn’t blame you if you never came around again
To hear me say, “Watch them play!” or hear me sing…

Blind Horse
04:24

This place is cursed and so are we
but you deserve the best of me
If I were to show you
it just it wouldn’t be
What a strange little world where love is love is love is true
and truth is stranger is fiction
And I feel so strange
So strange around you
There’s no victory in this sort of wisdom
Yes I know now, I know and still something’s missing
Timing isn’t everything but it’s sure something
You can’t be my everything but you’re sure something, you’re sure something.
What did you know and when did you know it?
how it burns to get the third degree
I could hold my tongue; sweat it out just once
you’d do the same for me
Even in my dreams it’s wrong
once last place you can’t stay long
A wink is a nod is a promise not to cry
We just said hello and we said goodbye
There’s no victory in this sort of wisdom
There’s no place but here and no time for wishing
Timing isn’t everything but it’s sure something
you’ll never be my everything but you’re sure something
you’re sure something
you’re sure something

That's Not Affection
03:12
|
|||
That’s not affection coming through your screen
Our love needs reciprocity
I’ll pick you up at your apartment if you can manage to escape
Well, we didn’t get invited but we’re going anyway
I wonder if they’ll let us both in...
I’ve been there once: those people ain’t right
They talk with their thumbs even when they’re in plain sight
Yeah that’s what they’re like when they don’t want you around
They can tell you to fuck off without making a sound
I’m not anyone’s price to pay
I don’t love that what doesn’t love back
Leave me where you found me
Do we know what the cost is if we don’t even know what’s lost?
If we keep on throwing out anything real?
How much you wanna bet all the kids at the fête
Will be standing in a circle with the same drink
And they won’t be saying a thing?
Well, I’ve been here twice: these people ain’t right
They talk with their thumbs even when they’re in plain sight
Yeah that’s what they’re like when they don’t want you around
They can tell you to fuck off without making a sound
I’m not anyone’s price to pay
I don’t love that what doesn’t love back
Leave me where you found me
Well, I’ve been here twice (maybe the third time’s a charm?)
But those old clichés keep doing me harm
Yeah that’s how they are when they don’t want you around
They can tell you to fuck off without making a sound
I’m not anyone’s price to pay
I don’t love that what doesn’t love back
Leave me where you found me

Coup de Cœur
03:37
|
|||
If I was another man,
Do you think I’d play these games?
On ground so firm is where I’d stand
If I was another man.
If this was a one night stand
Swallowed by the moon,
Giving in to wicked plans,
If this was a one night stand...
The truth is not a song unsung
until it trickles out into the gulf
‘cause all good things are left undone.
You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.
At twenty I was bloodshot, boys,
screaming in the wind,
and giving in to hateful noise.
At twenty I was bloodshot, boys.
Does this love stand to proof?
Just map it on the wall
from Shreveport down to Baton Rouge.
Surrender to the coup de coeur.
The truth is not a song unsung
until it trickles out into the gulf
‘cause all good things are left undone.
You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.
You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.
My headstrong ways have always done me wrong.
You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.

Rude Gambler
02:50
|
|||
I saw that .45 against his hip
A smarter person would’ve zipped their lip
But he’s been drinking courage
And he’s got a lot to say
Since I painted his world blue
Cocktail, ginger ale: 5 bucks a glass
I had a half a dozen and they knocked me on my ass
Until my mind whispered to my lips
“It’s time to go out sinking ships
So c’mon, light the fuse”
So I said, “I’m tired of going ‘round and ‘round with you
Dwelling ain’t what I came here to do
I thought I told you never stick that
Finger in my face again
Or I’ll break that finger off!”
Never had a friend I didn’t screw
I’ve drank their wine and had their lovers, too
Tonight don’t mean a thing; c’mon and take a swing
I’m a gambler and I’m all in
Finally he’d had enough of me
So he stuck that .45 against my cheek
So I said a prayer to someone else’s god
Though I know the gods have
No control over me
I took one final look around
I closed my eyes but didn’t hear a sound
And when it jammed I knew I’d earned
My freedom with no lesson learned
So I beat him blue again
Never had a friend I didn’t screw
I’ve drank their wine and had their lovers, too
I’ve lived to tell the tale; I’m still out on the trail
I’m a gambler and I’m all in

Runnin’ for a month of Sundays
mile after loaded mile
too long since I’ve been drove wild
Stackers and yellowjackets and
black coffee won’t subside
Gotta rest but I’m so damn wired.
How long ‘til my mind gets tired?
Grab the new Country Singles
read about love confined
gonna see what my heart can find
Silver white werewolf will be
marked with the telltale sign
Fortune teller gonna change my mind
Gonna see what my heart can find
Stuck inside can’t get out, Stuck inside can’t get out
Stuck inside can’t get out, Stuck inside can’t get out
Year & a month of Sundays
Never once seen the moon rise
any place but my dreams at night
Gypsies sing by their campfires ‘bout
angels with wings all tied
When you see it will you know the sign?
And how long ‘til you drop a line?
Darling it gets so lonesome
up here on Ransom Road
ramblin man like you would know
Softly I’ll scratch your stomach
Makin’ your muzzle smile
Pretty soon they review my file
You know I could make it worth your while
Stuck inside can’t get out, Stuck inside can’t get out
Stuck inside can’t get out, Stuck inside can’t get out
Stuck inside can’t get out, Stuck inside can’t get out
Stuck inside can’t get out, Stuck inside can’t get out
